Too often I have failed to dream about what I would like to see happen in this country. I have become increasingly discouraged about so many things that I have seen happen around me in the last two decades that I have traded my optimism for resentment, blame and distrust. I tried to tell myself that my youthful hope simply evolved from a naiveté, unsophistication and lack of general knowledge about the true evils of this world. Now I believe I understand the degradation that has occurred before my own eyes. I think we all have a sense of blaming a willing coalition of politicians and conglomerates for the deregulation of the media, the diversion of valuable tax dollars to selfish schemes and the loss of so many protections for the common, hard-working people that have been the backbone of this country. Perhaps most disheartening of all is the deep divisions that seem to turn us blindly against each other. After the nightmare presidency of Bush, turning our precious notions of decency and responsibility upside-down, I was left with very little in the way of dreams.
But if I still could, I would dream of an America where our minds could truly be free, fed by the lofty aspirations and honest reporting of a society united by a common goal of caring for every citizen and keeping our commitments around the world. An America where the cold-hearted and insane ramblings of agitators like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck were simply relegated to the trash can of ignorance and prejudice as they once surely were in my childhood. I would dream of an America where knowledge and achievement were valued above ideology and narrow-mindedness. I would dream of an America where school employment centers did not rest until every graduate had been placed in a position of gainful employment. I would dream of an America where even the great robber barons and captains of industry remembered the value of charity and philanthropy. I would dream of an America where conservatives and liberals alike could work together in a spirit of enlightened self-interest seeing our nation as a whole, not a tapestry of haves and have-nots. I would dream of building more libraries in more small towns and promoting life-long learning for anyone who would seek it. I would dream of an America where the accumulation of wealth would be balanced by care and protection of American families, singles and senior citizens, with pensions and health care and rewards for honest toil.

Will the Real Fascists Please Stand Up?
Fascism was originally an authoritarian movement started by Benito Mussolini in March 1919, which came to power in Italy in Oct. 1922. Later on it became the general name for similar movements started in other countries, among which German national socialism is the most prominent. By 1940 fascism could be regarded as a form of societal organization and as an attitude of mind which had its adherents in practically all countries of the earth. The original Italian name of “fascismo” is derived from the Latin “fasces,” bundles, denoting in ancient Rome a bundle of rods with an axe, borne before Roman magistrates as a symbol of authority.
The origins of the fascist movement in Italy are to be found both in the wave of disillusionment and at the same time in the exacerbated nationalism which swept Italy after 1918. Even before the war of 1914-1918, Enrico Corradini had propagated a doctrine of extreme and belligerent nationalism, which had fanned enthusiasm for the Libyan War of 1911 and for imperial expansion, and the poet Gabriele d’Anninzio had exalted in verse and prose not only the mission of a victorious Italy, but also the love of danger, adventure and war. In the military coup by which he and a legion of black-shirted followers gained possession of Fiume in Sept. 1919, and during the 16 months in which he as Duce ruled the city, d’Annunzio introduced a constitution foreshadowing the “corporative state” and all the rites, salutes, allocutions and mass shouts which later became characteristic of the fascist movement. Mussolini himself before 1914 had been a leading member and editor of the Italian Social Democratic party, but he had always represented the tendencies of revolutionary syndicalism with their emphasis on direct action and enthusiastic will. Against the attitude of his party, Mussolini supported Italy’s entrance into the war in the fall of 1914; on November 15 he founded his own newspaper, the Popolo d’Italia, in Milan, which called itself an organ of combatants and producers and carried the social revolutionary motto by Blanqui, “Who has steel has bread,” and Napoleon’s saying, “The revolution is an idea which has found bayonets.” Mussolini’s first famous editorial bore the characteristic title, “Audacity.”
In the social unrest and moral confusion which followed the war of 1914-1918, Mussolini founded the Fasci di Combattimento on March 23, 1919, in Milan. The new group had no definite program; at first Mussolini was still a revolutionary syndicalist, who propagated the expropriation of the land, the mines, and all means of transportation. It was not until the beginning of 1921 that he allied his group openly with the propertied classes, with the landowners and the industrialists. But whatever his sociological affiliations, he was moved throughout by a fierce nationalism and by the love of violence and adventure. When he ran in Milan for a parliamentary seat in the elections of Nov. 16, 1919, he got less that 5,000 votes out of 346,000. But the deep social unrest prevailing in Italy in 1920 gave Mussolini a chance, and though the danger of any bolshevist or socialist success had entirely faded by the end of the year, Mussolini and his squads of violent young men appeared to the frightened upper classes as a guarantee of security. Thus, with the army conniving, Mussolini’s followers set for themselves the task of “restoring order” and breaking up the socialist movements and organizations. With a boastful ruthlessness, with the proud sacrifice of all ethical scruples to success, the local squadristis, under the leadership of men like Grandi, Balbo, Farinacci and others, set out for the conquest of power in the name of youth against what they called “the tottering parliamentarism” of the “senile” and undecided liberals. The lack of resistance on the part of the government, the army and the police, emboldened the fascists who had formed themselves into the national fascist party in Nov. 1921.
In the following year Mussolini completely abandoned his original socialist, anti-monarchist and anti-Catholic program. He had no definite doctrine to offer. “Our program is simple: we wish to govern Italy. They ask us for programs, but there are already too many. It is not programs that are wanting for the salvation of Italy, but men and will power.” On Oct. 28, 1922, the famous march on Rome was staged. Though the fascists and the nationalists were outnumbered in the Italian parliament by ten to one, and though with some show of resolute action the fascists could easily have been stopped, the king refused to sign the proclamation of the state of siege which his government had prepared, and on Oct. 29 invited Mussolini to form the new government. Though the new prime minister at first accepted a coalition cabinet and preserved some of the forms of the liberal state, within a very few years all the trappings of parliamentarism were gone, all other parties outlawed, all civil liberties and constitutional guarantees suppressed, and a full dictatorship established. The process was accelerated by the reaction of the country and of the civilized world to the murder of the socialist deputy Matteotti, in June 1924, on the eve of his exposure of the graft and corruption of the fascist party. Highest fascist officials were alleged to have been implicated in the murder. In his effort to save his regime from the outraged feelings of the country, which in turn was identified with its leader. Though he professed to fight bolshevism, he successfully adopted its methods, without, however, being able to carry them in the different climate of Italy as far as they were carried in Russia and later on in Germany. The different squadristi organizations had been reformed on Feb. 10, 1923, as the Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale.
Fascism in its beginnings was not a doctrine and had no clearly elaborated program. It was a technique for gaining and retaining power by violence, and with an astonishing flexibility it subordinated all questions of program to this one aim. But it was dominated from the beginning by a definite attitude of mind which exalted the fighting spirit, military discipline, ruthlessness and action, and rejected contemptuously all ethical motives as weakening the resoluteness of will. Fascism is power politics and realpolitik in their most naked form; all theoretical considerations are subservient to what is regarded as the “inexorable dynamics” of the factual situation. Ultimately everything depends upon the ever-changing will of the leader, decisions which cannot be discussed, but are blindly obeyed and immediately executed. Thus fascism could present itself in a given situation as a bulwark of the social order against social revolution, against Marxism and the proletariat, and could in a different situation become the propagandist and spearhead of a proletarian world revolution against conservatism and wealth, against bourgeoisie and capitalism.

Merchants of Death
The other day, over at MikeB’s place, I was lamenting the fact that it was extremely difficult to prove that U.S. manufactured and purchased weapons were trickling over the border into the hands of Mexican cartels. It’s not that no one has attempted to report about this problem. But hard data is very rare and only comes about when a smuggling ring is indicted or a major killing of government officials takes place in Mexico with weapons that were purchased legally in the United States. Then, as I was waking up this morning, I heard on the radio about this heartless nineteen-year-old who would happily trade away the innocent lives of his fellow human beings south of the border for a handful of dollars. Just one week earlier, a twenty-year-old attempted to bring two automatic weapons across in Yuma.
It may have been this clarion call to action published by the NY Times on tax day 2009 that inspired Rep. Eliot L. Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere to order a special report from the GAO on U.S. guns entering Mexico illegally.

John Phillip Hernandez, a 24-year-old unemployed machinist who lived with his parents, walked into a giant sporting goods store here in July 2006, and plunked $2,600 in cash on a glass display counter. A few minutes later, Mr. Hernandez walked out with three military-style rifles. One of those rifles was recovered seven months later in Acapulco, Mexico, where it had been used by drug cartel gunmen to attack the offices of the Guerrero State attorney general, court documents say. Four police officers and three secretaries were killed.
Although Mr. Hernandez was arrested last year as part of a gun-smuggling ring, most of the 22 others in the ring are still at large. Before their operation was discovered, the smugglers had transported what court documents described as at least 339 high-powered weapons to Mexico over a year and a half, federal agents said. “There is no telling how long that group was operating before we caught on to them,” said J. Dewey Webb, the agent in charge of the Houston division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Noting there are about 1,500 licensed gun dealers in the Houston area, Mr. Webb added, “You can come to Houston and go to a different gun store every day for several months and never alert any one.”
Our gun nut friends tell us that there is no “loophole.” Perhaps “superhighway” might be a more apt metaphor.
As a result, in some states along the Southwest border where firearms are lightly regulated, gun smugglers can evade detection for months or years. In Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, dealers can sell an unlimited number of rifles to anyone with a driver’s license and a clean criminal record without reporting the sales to the government.
At gun shows in these states, there is even less regulation. Private sellers, unlike licensed dealers, are not obligated to record the buyer’s name, much less report the sale to the A.T.F. Sending straw buyers into American stores, cartels have stocked up on semiautomatic AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, converting some to machine guns, investigators in both countries say. They have also bought .50 caliber rifles capable of stopping a car and Belgian pistols able to fire rifle rounds that will penetrate body armor. Federal agents say about 90 percent of the 12,000 pistols and rifles the Mexican authorities recovered from drug dealers last year and asked to be traced came from dealers in the United States, most of them in Texas and Arizona.
I know that the gun nuts have seen this 90% figure before and have been concocting stories to refudiate it ever since. (h/t to Sarah Palin.)
A review of cases over the last two years shows a pattern: the drug cartels hire people in need of cash with no criminal records to buy guns from legal sources, often just one or two at a time.
Once the smugglers have amassed a cache of weapons, they drive them across the border in small batches, stuffed inside spare tires, fastened to undercarriages with zip ties or bubble-wrapped and tucked into vehicle panels. In some cases, the drug traffickers and gun smugglers are linked.
Here’s your “loophole:” Never mind private sales and private dealers at gun shows.
The record keeping is not always perfect. In trying to track guns confiscated in Mexico last year, agents found that one in five of the guns could not be traced because the dealers had no record of the sale or had gone out of business and the records had been lost. Even when the original legal buyer is located, a gun owner in many states, can legally say “I lost it” or “I sold it to someone I do not know.”
Dealers are not obligated to tell the authorities about multiple sales of rifles like the AK-47, as they must do with pistols.
A lot of people thought that Obama and Napolitano were actually going to do something concrete to combat this problem, especially after the aforementioned report.

The United States lacks a coordinated strategy to stem the flow of weapons smuggled across its southern border, a failure that has fueled the rise of powerful criminal cartels and violence in Mexico, a government watchdog agency report has found. The report by the congressional Government Accountability Office, the first federal assessment of the issue, offered blistering conclusions that will probably influence the debate over the role of U.S.-made weaponry as violence threatens to spill across the Mexico border.According to a draft copy of the report, which will be released today, the growing number of weapons being smuggled into Mexico comprise more than 90% of the seized firearms that can be traced by authorities there. In the meantime, illegally obtained U.S. weapons -- including an increasing number of automatic rifles -- are being used to kill thousands of Mexican police, soldiers, elected officials and civilians, the report said.
But the GAO criticisms go beyond operational concerns. Some findings cited laws and policies in the U.S. and Mexico that could make it difficult to institute lasting reforms such as lax U.S. laws for collecting and reporting information on firearms purchases, and a lack of required background checks for private firearms sales.
But alas, Obama couldn’t risk his perfect record of kowtowing to the gun lobby and its maniacal cadre of gun owners. Fat lot of good it did him, since idiots like Zach Wamp still campaign on protecting our guns from Obama. Fear not gun owners, Obama doesn’t want to make you fill out any extra paperwork or register your guns with the ATF. That’s right. His idea? Send a bunch of National Guard troops to the border for a summer vacation. Great. That ought to dry up the flow of marijuana, amphetamines and heroin for a little while. Better stock up junkies.

May the Best Candidate Win
I applaud Sarah Palin for her decision to resign as governor for the greater good of her nation. By participating in the debate which will one day give birth to the new incarnation of the Republican party, she is an invaluable asset to all Americans. I do, however, see it as a sign of weakness that she would quit her job, an easy job, at that. It only can speak to her loyalty to the Republican party, or any party, or no party at all! Party on Garth and Sarah!
This has become the defining match of our time. I, for one am thrilled. I could not think of a better person to go up against Obama.

Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Blogging
This MLK Jr./Obama weekend was so good. People everywhere just feeling the beauty and freedom of the ideas that Martin espoused. Reading Martin Luther King, Jr., A Profile, edited by C. Eric Lincoln. Reading from the text of MLK's own speeches and writings from A Testament of Hope. Hearing San Diego's own Martin Luther King Choir. The assurance and grace that Obama is showing as our new president. Surely this has been a great coming-together of hope, peace and love for like-minded individuals across this fair land and indeed the world. We would not have another Republican president to follow the sadistic presidency of George W. Bush. But far greater than just that is the faith that we can place in Obama to turn to the monumental task of rebuilding our world and restoring the prestige and admiration of the peoples of the world to the United States of America. There is no better man qualified for the job. The democratic party has a new leader. God has indeed blessed the U.S.A.
The damage done by the Bush presidency has exceeded in reality the most dire predictions held deeply inside the minds of Bush's most ardent critics. Most of us predicted instability, insurrection and violence in Iraq, but few could have predicted the unprecedented level and persistence of violence. Most of us predicted an interruption in infrastructure and services, but no one could have predicted the dismal performances of U.S. military and contractors in providing these services. I guess the contractors were mostly concerned with covering their own asses. We all knew that American service personnel in Iraq would die, but we didn't guess the number would exceed 4,321. We could never have seen that the U.S. military would send so many innocent Iraqis to their death, or imprison and torture their finest young men. These are nightmare scenarios that can only come from the reality of the undiluted evil that was the flagship of the Bush presidency. And who among us can judge the number of dead, wounded and displaced that is acceptable as a trade-off for the gains that we have seen in Iraq. Personally, I don't see them. When others wrestled with their consciences about their support for the Viet Nam war, his voice came as loud and clear as thunder.
In our collective lives, our sin rises to even greater heights. See how we treat each other. Races trample over races; nations trample over nations. We go to war and destroy the values and the lives that God has given us. We leave the battlefields of the world painted with blood, and we end up with wars that burden us with national debts higher than mountains of gold, filling our nations with orphans and widows, sending thousands of men home psychologically deranged and physically handicapped... This is the tragic plight of man... So long as he lives on the lower level he will be frustrated, disillusioned and bewildered... Western civilization, like the prodigal son, has strayed away to the far country of segregation and discrimination. You have trampled over sixteen million of your brothers... In the midst of all your material wealth, you are spiritually and morally poverty-stricken, unable to speak to the conscience of this world.
So let us all give a hearty thanks to not only MLK, but to all those who came before him, all those who worked tirelessly with him, all those who put their own lives, safety and security on the line in Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma and Memphis and across this world from Ghana and South Africa to Poland and Germany. We do not live in a perfect world. But I live in a country where citizens of all colors, religions and persuasions have equal access to education, employment, housing and civil liberties. I live in a state peopled by all races of the world, which will one day soon no longer have a majority of European whites. It will still be the great state of California. Nothing can diminish that. And when one of our brothers or sisters gives in to the temptation to embrace racism, prejudice or hatred, it is that citizen who is to be pitied.
The damage done by the Bush presidency has exceeded in reality the most dire predictions held deeply inside the minds of Bush's most ardent critics. Most of us predicted instability, insurrection and violence in Iraq, but few could have predicted the unprecedented level and persistence of violence. Most of us predicted an interruption in infrastructure and services, but no one could have predicted the dismal performances of U.S. military and contractors in providing these services. I guess the contractors were mostly concerned with covering their own asses. We all knew that American service personnel in Iraq would die, but we didn't guess the number would exceed 4,321. We could never have seen that the U.S. military would send so many innocent Iraqis to their death, or imprison and torture their finest young men. These are nightmare scenarios that can only come from the reality of the undiluted evil that was the flagship of the Bush presidency. And who among us can judge the number of dead, wounded and displaced that is acceptable as a trade-off for the gains that we have seen in Iraq. Personally, I don't see them. Deregulation: A Primer
This thesis was originally intended to instruct a child when the honorable senator, John McCain decided to suspend his presidential campaign to save the economy. It is here presented in its original outline.
Let us examine together the great financial crisis which so suddenly thrust itself upon an unwitting public last week.
1. I guess it's not a crisis until the banks themselves are forced to show their books. Never mind the American people facing foreclosure, these loans aren't worth what they should be to trade on the open market. The truth is that nobody who was holding a traditional mortgage would really be out very much money on a defaulted property, even if it had lost 20% of its value. On a typically amortized loan, the lion's share of the interest is paid upfront. Even if a loan goes into default, after two to five years of payments, no lender is going to come out upside-down. That's just what they want you to think. The loan is sold as an investment. The interest that has already been paid has already been pocketed.
2. The only historical precedent we have to this scandal unless somebody in the Hoover administration is willing to come forward is the savings and loan scandal of the late 1980's. See the "Keating Five" via Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keating_Five Deregulation allowed fund managers for savings and loans companies to invest in extremely risky junk bonds. When the losses came flooding, the government made savings accounts whole through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. At least that was a fairly straightforward scam, using existing laws in conjunction with deregulation.
3. As you can imagine, much like pool safety rules and regulations, regulation of industry is supposed to guard and protect the consumer against fraud, abuse and certain eventualities or outcomes that can prove very negative to the consumer. They are usually written by the good guys. They are not needless Lilliputian constraints place upon business as conservatives would have you believe. These are the laws that protect you and me from harm.
4. Deregulation is popular with conservatives, because it usually means businesses can get away with murder. Witness the deregulation of electricity in California. Good regulation could have easily prevented this crisis.
5. All of a sudden Dick and George thought up this bailout plan as the magic bullet as soon as they got the news? I don't think so. It's all part of a plan. They thought it up a long time ago. There's a reason it doesn't include helping out American families with ARM's. They want to give the money to their buddies on Wall Street. Bush resisted calls to limit the salaries, bonuses and golden parachutes of executives of these very companies that are supposed to be bailed out. That's just the way they do business.
6. I know, you're thinking. Money doesn't just disappear. What happened to all the money that was lost in this debacle? Who got to strain it through their baileen before it disappeared? Near as I can tell, they really don't know who exactly will benefit when these scams go down. I guess as long as it's a businessman and the consumer takes the fall, then it's allright. It must have been pretty chaotic this time around, but they know who will make up the difference. That's right. You and me, the American taxpayer.
7. McCain doesn't know what, if anything, that can be done. And indeed, has a track record of going along with this kind of stuff.

Why I am not on board with Obama and the greatest thing to happen in politics today
I am like many people, one who very quickly fell in love with Obama. I saw him give the keynote address at the 2004 convention. By the time I saw Obama girl, it should have been all over. Obama is an exciting, principled and powerful force. His ideas about restoring foreign policy and alliances soothed my ailing soul. But it didn't take me long to fall for Hillary in much the same way. The more that I actually heard her speak and debate, the more I liked her. Of course, we must put aside the differences of this campaign and unite as democrats behind Barack. Unfortunately, that may not be so easy. There is blatant hostility from both the HRC and BHO camps which is unprecedented in the history of our party. I have had to stand idly by while my party was criticized ruthlessly. I could say nothing because every accusation was true. The past several years, seen by most intelligent Americans as a damning record of the many sins of George W. Bush, are really a greater indictment of the collapse of the party that has consistently held dear the dreams of the rank and file American. In my opinion, Obama rises above this system-wide failure. But how do I know? It seems that the donkey has learned from the pig to trust in the joys of the feeding trough above all else. The failure of the 2002 congress to stand up to Bush' threat of war. The no less heinous failure of the democratically controlled congress to oppose any and all subsequent war funding measures. The insider control exhibited by the party elite which stood idly by or else pushed an Obama victory. These are not the earmarks of the party I understood to represent my best hopes. I have many times defended Obama against charges of under-handed attacks levelled at Hillary throughout this campaign. I didn't believe that he condoned or controlled the behavior of those campaigning on his behalf. But once that behavior has been examined publicly many times and yet continues, Obama does not get a pass. I can't ignore the outcry that he has caused in the feminist community. If he can't manage his own campaign, he will have difficulty with a conservative pentagon and CIA. I think he is naive and will get trounced if and when he gets to the White House, just like Jimmy Carter did. Little things count too. His cordiality seems to have a cynical air that he can't turn off. His apologies sound like he is apologizing for anyone simple enough to not understand that his statements were justified. I just don't like him that much anymore. Still I'm hoping against hope that he truly can unite our party and lead us to victory. What choice do I have? I haven't lost sight of what truly is at stake as have many of my friends. But he has wittingly or unwittingly alienated many in his own party.

When Government Interference Includes Surgery
Call me selfish, irresponsible or just plain crazy, I don't get my male dogs neutered. First and foremost, I wouldn't want it to happen to me, so I just don't have the heart. Secondly, it destroys their gender. How can anyone really be a man after that has been taken away. Thirdly, I don't believe it is healthy to upset the natural balance of hormones. I've seen a lot of lean, powerful, intact males, as well as several overweight and puny neutered males. Since most female dogs in my community are generally spayed, the only time problems come up is when someone is trying to breed a female. What a great way to meet your neighbors! We don't need the sweeping manadatory spaying and neutering described in the California Assembly bill passed just last week. We have no right to own horses, sheep, goats, llamas or even chickens within the city. Now they want to attack our dogs and cats. The alarming statistics are not a clarion call to legislate away our most cherished freedoms. It is a matter of personal responsibility. It will also make it a lot harder to find the dog of your dreams. If this gets through the Senate at all, never my how it is amended, I hope that Arnold steps up to the plate with a nice double to prove that he really is the governor of California.

Here's what I think of NBC Today Show
Dear Matt and Meredith, I just want to go on record as thoroughly disgusted, appalled and horrified at your choice to air portions of the video of the Virginia Tech shooter. Your apologetic qualification about your agonizing decision was phony and patronizing. You saw for yourselves how he glorified the Columbine shootings. There was no peaceful purpose in you taking advantage of your exclusive. This can only serve to further the violence. To say nothing of the feelings of the family members, students, staff and faculty. This is much greater than a shame on you. You have committed a journalistic crime akin to airing video of Osama Bin Laden. I am calling for a very public and widely disseminated apology. The harm you have done will not be undone, but you can confess your sin and perhaps show remorse. You have sunk to a new low. You have prostituted yourselves to the almighty dollar at the expense of loving and caring Americans. You have also placed many people in imminent danger. This is a guilty stain on NBC for the foreseeable future. I will never watch your show again. These videos should have been turned over to law enforcement and never again seen the light of day. Ugly, ugly, ugly. You are truly an example of the worst America has to offer. I hope you all lose your jobs and never work in news again.

Maybe you predicted this too?
Here is a classic e-mail I sent to radio personality, Stacy Taylor in January of 2006 predicting the current chaos in Iraq. Stacy's response is not printed in this blog:
Dear Stacy, It is ironic that you burned Dennis Miller for doing stale material. He went over to the dark side back in March of '03. When it was time for "Shock and Awe," otherwise known as Dolly Parton's left and right titties, right before they decided it wasn 't such a good idea to televise the war, Dennis was saying he had never been so proud to be an American on Leno or one of those late night talk shows. When thinking Americans, reeling from the successful propaganda of American service personnel wearing chemical suits in the desert furnace of the Iraqi summer, were absolutely horrified by the slow, inexorable march to war, Dennis was cheerfully prostituting himself for the neo-conservative chicken hawks. This apparent glee was caused by the televised firebombing and Navy shelling of the city of Baghdad.
Also... now that the "thin green line" report has been made public, it might do to talk about the squandering of the wealth and assets of the most powerful military in the world. We all knew when the enormous Navy cargo vessels were being loaded to the gunwhales with humvees, fighting vehicles and every imaginable type of equipment that none of that equipment would ever return to the U.S. or any other strategic location in the world. The president would have his war no matter what, even as he lied through his teeth about it being Saddam who chose this war. Probably the gas needed to ship all that stuff across the Atlantic caused the oil shortage. If the stated cost of the war is hovering around 250 gigadollars, you know that does not include assets that were already paid for, fuel, or a thousand other hidden costs. The sad part is that even if every American believed that the war would eventually cost more than a trillion dollars, there will someday be 3,000 American dead, and somehow became aware of Iraqi casualties and miraculously actually gave a damn, there would still be those who said it was the right thing to do. At least we got rid of that Saddam!
Fortunately, the Chinese at this time do not seem disposed to attack our interests in the world, but with all this debt they are buying, Kruschev must be laughing in his grave. A very concerned listener who takes this all extremely seriously.

He's one of us!
You know what I hate? I remember Bilbray's television spot where he is running down to the surf in his wetsuit carrying a surfboard with his two sons. "Brian Bilbray...He's one of us!" This doesn't match with supporting oil drilling off the coast of California. He is clearly one of them!
